Student Application Process:

All students nominated by there school to participate in the Summer High School Institute must send the following items, all together, to the HSI office by the due date established.

  • Student Application Form -- Include a list of activities

  • Two Letters of Recommendation -- One must be from a current high school teacher.  The second letter may be from a teacher, counselor, or youth leader.

  • Letter of Application -- Include the reasons for wanting to participate AND an explanation of what you hope to gain from the experience

  • Student Essay

  • Transcript with Standardized Test Scores

 

(If you are interested in attending HSI but do not know if you are one of your schools nominees, talk to your high school counselor for more information.)

 

Student Selection

The Student Selection Committee is made up of outstanding UW faculty.  Nominees must express, through their application, the following to the selection committee:

  • creativity, imagination, and curiosity

  • initiative and motivation

  • communication skills

  • problem-solving skills

  • insight

  • humor

  • enthusiasm about learning and life in general

  • responsibility and a good attitude (able to follow rules, will get to class on time, can turn things in on time, etc.)

 

These qualities are taken seriously.  We expect all of our HSI participants to have traits, aptitudes, and behaviors associated with the "gifted and talented."
